Our furry friends are part of our family.
They bring a lot of joy but they can also bring some stress, especially during a move.
Austin movers, American Relocation, have plenty of experience moving with pets. Here are some tips to help keep everyone safe and happy:
- Preparation- Many pets do not handle change well. Bring in moving supplies early to help get them used to the boxes. If your pets do not have experience traveling, take them on smaller trips to help them become familiar with it. If these smaller trips do not go well, you may want to ask your vet about medication for the stress or anxiety
- Moving day- Open doors, strangers moving out boxes, and loud noises all present safety hazards for animals. They could run away, bite someone or get stepped on. Boarding your pets or at least securing them in a separate room ensures their safety and a calmer environment.
- The trip- Try to reduce water intake several hours before you leave. Make sure your pets are secure and comfortable. Be sure to bring toys to occupy them on the trip and treats to reward them at rest areas.
- Moving in- Once you move in, get your pet settled in one room. Give them familiar items like toys and their blanket or bed. Slowly introduce them to the rest of the house so you do not overwhelm them.
